Your Experience

The Barcelona Aquarium is perhaps the best place for families with kids to learn about marine biodiversity and the importance of marine conservation, two themes that run close to everything the Aquarium does in terms of it's activities and it's set up. The facility is divided into 35 aquariums and enclosures that house approximately 11,000 animals across 450 species. As such, there is no doubt plenty to see and admire here, but there are some things that you just can't miss!

Explora! Children's Area

If you're visiting with young kids, this has to be at the top of your to do list! Explora! is an interactive space especially for children located within the aquarium wherein children can explore three recreated Mediterranean coastlines, the marshes of the Ebro Delta, the Costa Brava, and the underwater cave of the Medes Island, as well as learn about the marine worlds through approximately 50 activities, designed to stimulate all 5 senses.

Planeta Aqua

Situated on the second floor, Planeta Aqua helps you understand the evolution and adaptation of marine life to their natural environments through the usage of interactive technology like computer games and information panels, as well as small aquariums used to observe creatures of the deep that have adapted to recreated habitats using phenomena like symbiosis, camouflage. These habitats are Life in the Cold, the Tropical Universe, and the World of Darkness. You will also get to admire different kinds of rays here, from fresh water stingrays to eagle rays.

The Oceanarium

The awe inspiring Oceanarium is the pride of Barcelona Aquarium and unique in Europe. It is the largest aquarium at the venue and, unsurprisingly, plays home to the most number of species. Spanning a diameter of 36 meters with a depth of 5 meters, and holding 4 million litres of water, it is perhaps the most accurate recreation of the Mediterranean sea floor, housing species such as the sand tiger shark, the sandbar shark, moray eels and ocean sunfish. You can even walk beneath the Oceanarium for a unique perspective on the marine life by navigating the 80 meter long transparent tunnel that runs beneath the tank.
